Enterprise AI Impact

Microsoft told engineers to stop using Claude Code. Uber burned its 2026 AI budget in 4 months.

Microsoft just cancelled Claude Code licenses across its Experiences and Devices group.

Windows. M365. Outlook. Teams. Surface.

The reason wasn't performance. It was the bill.

Engineers were spending $500 to $2,000 per month each. Token-based billing charges per unit of output. When you use an AI agent for hours on complex coding tasks, those tokens pile up fast.

Microsoft moved them to GitHub Copilot CLI instead. Claude models still run inside Copilot. The broader Anthropic deal — including a $5 billion investment — remains intact.

This isn't a vendor rejection. It's a cost structure failure.

Uber's situation makes it concrete. Their CTO told The Information the company burned through its entire 2026 AI coding budget in four months.

"I'm back to the drawing board," he said. "Because the budget I thought I would need is blown away already."

84% of Uber engineers adopted Claude Code. 70% of code committed now originates with AI. 11% of live back-end updates ship with no human in the loop.

The budget collapsed not because engineers were wasting tokens. Because they were actually using the tool. Exactly what leadership demanded.

Nvidia's VP of applied AI research put it plainly: For his team, the cost of compute is far beyond the cost of employees.

Audit your AI tooling spend today. If you're on token-based billing, model your actual usage — not your projected usage. The gap between those two numbers is where budgets go to die.

SIGNAL: The two largest enterprise AI adopters just hit the same wall. AI coding tools work — that's the problem. Token-based pricing models are structurally incompatible with at-scale enterprise adoption. Every CIO reviewing AI budgets this quarter needs to see this.
