OpenAI just bought the cloud layer that lets Codex agents work while you sleep

OpenAI acquired Ona — the German startup formerly known as Gitpod — for its persistent cloud execution environments.

Your Codex agents die when you close your laptop.

Ona fixes that.

This is not a talent acqui-hire. Ona built Firecracker-style microVMs and Kubernetes orchestration for isolated agent execution. Enterprise clients needed secure, ephemeral environments where AI-generated code could run safely — with audit logs, network policies, and customer-controlled VPC deployment.

Codex hit 5 million weekly active users this month, up from 3M in April. That growth exposed the fundamental architecture problem: session-bound agents don't scale for multi-hour refactors, sub-agent orchestration, or overnight CI runs.

Ona's platform gives Codex exactly what Claude Cowork already has — persistent cloud environments where agents keep working after the developer walks away.

The competitive pressure is real. Anthropic shipped Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 9, two days before this deal. Claude Code leads on SWE-Bench Pro at 80.3% and has sub-agents, hooks, skills, and Agent SDK shipping as a platform. OpenAI needed a cloud story fast.

What changes: Codex tasks will run in isolated microVMs instead of short-lived OpenAI sandboxes. Sub-agent fleets execute in parallel across Ona-style containers. Enterprise customers get customer-controlled cloud deployment — your AWS, your security policies.

What's still unclear: pricing (does this count against Pro credits?), the Gitpod open-source edition's fate, and whether standalone Ona customers get a migration path or a wind-down.

If you're running Codex in production today, this deal changes your architecture planning within 6 months.

Monitor the GPT-5.6 launch closely. If it ships with first-party Ona-backed cloud execution as a default, the coding agent race resets entirely.
