Mistral AI is negotiating a €3 billion funding round at a €20 billion valuation.
Up 70% from September. The round is led by ASML, the Dutch chipmaker that already holds an 11% stake.
This isn't a startup story. This is Europe building sovereign AI infrastructure.
Mistral operates its own data centers in France and Sweden. It just borrowed $830 million for a new facility near Paris. Its customers are Airbus, BMW, and European governments.
CEO Arthur Mensch said it plainly last month: "We must have control over this technology." He was talking about cybersecurity vulnerabilities in AI models. He was also talking about dependency on US providers.
The enterprise implications are structural.
If you operate in Europe, your AI infrastructure options just split in two. OpenAI and Anthropic are the US track. Mistral is the European track. EU regulatory pressure will push you toward the second one.
Audit your AI vendor stack. If all your inference runs through US-based providers, you're one policy change away from compliance exposure.
The companies building AI are growing. The companies being disrupted by it are shrinking. Mistral just proved Europe is building, not buying.
