150,000 tech workers are gone. AI insiders are becoming billionaires. The math doesn't add up.

974 people per day.

That's the pace of tech layoffs in 2026 — 150,000 workers cut across 363 companies, 44% faster than last year.

Meanwhile, Cerebras IPO'd in May, popped 68%, and minted two overnight billionaires. SpaceX went public and hit $2.1 trillion. Anthropic and OpenAI are both marching toward trillion-dollar valuations.

And Marc Andreessen just called AI the "silver bullet excuse" for cuts that are really about pandemic overhiring.

"Every large company is overstaffed by at least 25%. Most by 50%. A lot by 75%."

Here's what's actually happening.

Companies are posting record revenue and laying people off anyway. May was the worst month for tech cuts in two years — 40,000 in a single month.

AI was cited as the reason for the third month running across every industry. But executives are quietly admitting the real story: Block's Jack Dorsey conceded he overhired. Uber burned through its entire 2026 AI coding budget in four months.

The divide is now political. Zuckerberg bought a $170 million mansion in March. Two months later, Meta laid off 8,000 people.

If your workforce plan assumes AI is replacing humans at scale, pressure-test that assumption against the actual data. Most companies cutting for AI aren't seeing ROI. They're cutting because the market rewards it.

Audit your AI transformation narrative before someone else does.

SIGNAL: The gap between AI wealth creation and AI-driven displacement is now wide enough to trigger social and regulatory backlash. Executives who cut headcount to fund AI without delivering measurable ROI are building a powder keg.
