142,000 workers fired. $700B poured into AI. Gartner just proved the cuts don't work.

142,000 tech workers are gone in five months.

Companies that fired them posted record profits the same quarter.

Cloudflare cut 1,100 people while reporting $639.8M revenue.

Meta eliminated 8,000 roles on $26.8B net income.

Block slashed 40% of its workforce while projecting $12B gross profit.

The four hyperscalers — Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta — committed $700 billion to AI infrastructure this year. Nearly double 2025. The money is coming from payroll.

But Gartner surveyed 350 executives at $1B+ companies and found something the CEO talking points won't mention:

80% of companies that piloted AI reduced workforce.

None of it correlated with better returns.

The companies actually seeing strong AI returns weren't cutting people. They were redesigning roles. Gartner calls it "people amplification." It consistently outperforms workforce reduction.

Some companies already had to rehire for roles they eliminated after discovering AI couldn't operate without institutional knowledge.

Stanford HAI confirms: software developer employment for workers under 26 dropped 20% since 2024. Not because AI replaced them. Because companies fired them hoping it would.

Sam Altman called it "AI washing" — companies blaming AI for layoffs they'd do anyway. Deutsche Bank says it will be a defining feature of 2026.

Audit your workforce strategy today.

If your cuts are based on what AI might do instead of what it's already doing, you're not transforming. You're speculating with people's lives.

SIGNAL: Gartner's data proves the central premise of AI-driven layoffs is false. Companies cutting to fund AI aren't getting better returns than those who didn't cut. The playbook is broken.
