Google just cut its own threat hunters. Mandiant is bleeding. Your CISO should be furious.

Google Cloud quietly laid off staff from its Threat Intelligence Group and Mandiant over the past two weeks.

The same week it unveiled "agentic defense" AI tools at Cloud Next.

It cut the humans who actually investigate nation-state hackers.

Google acquired Mandiant for $5.4 billion in 2022. Now it's trimming the teams that made that acquisition worth anything. The Threat Intelligence Group published the research that identified state-sponsored campaigns your security team used as intelligence. That team just got smaller.

Google cited "redirecting investment toward growth areas such as AI" as the internal justification.

Here's what they won't say out loud: AI infrastructure spending is eating everything. Sundar Pichai announced that over half of Google's ML compute investment in 2026 goes to Cloud. When GPU budgets consume that much oxygen, every other function becomes a candidate for "optimization."

Your security stack depends on Google Cloud's threat intelligence. Mandiant's incident response capabilities are embedded in hundreds of enterprise SOC workflows. When Google cuts those teams, it's not just a Google problem. It's a propagation problem.

Cloudflare cut 1,100 people last month citing the "agentic AI era." Meta eliminated 10% of its workforce. US tech announced 38,000 cuts in May alone. The pattern is structural: security and operations roles are being traded for GPU clusters.

Audit your vendor's security team depth today. If your provider is cutting threat researchers while deploying AI security tools, you're trusting automated defenses with thinner human oversight. That's the opposite of what the threat landscape demands.

SIGNAL: Major cloud providers are cutting cybersecurity teams to fund AI infrastructure. Enterprise CISOs must assess whether their vendors' security posture is degrading faster than their AI capabilities are improving.
