The EU just voted to delay its AI law. Your compliance team just made its worst mistake.

The European Parliament just approved the Digital Omnibus on June 16.

423 votes to 57. The high-risk AI deadline just moved from August 2026 to December 2027.

Except it didn't.

The Omnibus is a political agreement. It is not law.

Council adoption hasn't happened. Official Journal publication hasn't happened.

Your August 2, 2026 deadline for standalone high-risk AI systems under Annex III is still the law in force right now.

If your compliance team read the headline and paused their conformity assessment work, they just exposed your organization to fines of up to €35M or 7% of global turnover.

Here is what is actually happening:

The EU agreed to push high-risk obligations to December 2, 2027 for standalone systems and August 2, 2028 for embedded systems.

But until the Council formally adopts it and publishes it in the Official Journal, the original Regulation 2024/1689 schedule governs everything.

Meanwhile, Article 50 transparency duties and the watermarking requirement hit December 2, 2026. That date did NOT move.

The new ban on AI nudifier apps and AI-generated CSAM also hits December 2, 2026.

And prohibited practices have been enforceable since February 2025. GPAI model obligations have been live since August 2025.

The only thing the Omnibus actually deferred is the heavy high-risk conformity assessment work. Everything else stays on schedule.

If your team is building to December 2027, confirm that the Council has formally adopted the Omnibus before you stop working. If it hasn't, you are still on the August 2026 clock.

The penalty ceiling didn't move. The obligations didn't disappear. You just got a planning gift that might not survive the next procedural step.
