The filings show software engineers as the single largest affected title: 56 positions eliminated. Another 39 technical leaders. 12 directors of software engineering. 15 engineering leaders. 17 product managers.

This is not trimming at the edges of a legacy division.

It is dismantling the scaffold of a product line while selling the replacement.

Cisco reported $15.8 billion in Q3 revenue. Up 12% year over year. $3.37 billion in net income. Up 35%.

AI infrastructure orders hit $5.3 billion year to date. The company raised full-year guidance to $9 billion. Four and a half times last year's total.

The workers being eliminated built the routers and switches that made Cisco dominant. The company is now selling silicon and optics designed for GPU cluster interconnects. The stack is changing. The people are not being retrained. They are being replaced.

This is Cisco's fourth restructuring in three years. Over 13,000 positions cut since early 2024. Record profits do not shield technical teams from AI-driven restructuring.

Gartner surveyed 350 enterprises deploying AI agents. Roughly 80 percent reduced headcount. The companies reporting the highest AI returns were not the ones with the largest workforce reductions. They were the ones that invested in upskilling.

Jensen Huang called the "AI efficiency" explanation for layoffs "lazy." Sam Altman called it "AI washing." Neither reading helps the 471 workers facing termination in 12 days.

Audit your workforce plan. If your role touches traditional enterprise software development, operations, or middle management, your exposure is identical to Cisco's eliminated positions. The next round targets non-AI functions at every major vendor.
