SAP just bought an 18-month-old AI lab for €1B+. Here's why every enterprise data team should care.

SAP completed its acquisition of Prior Labs yesterday.

The deal: €1B+ committed over four years to scale what was, until recently, a research project.

Prior Labs built TabPFN — a single foundation model that handles prediction tasks on structured enterprise data without per-dataset training.

Payment delays. Customer churn. Supplier risk. Demand forecasting. One model. No custom ML pipeline.

This is SAP's play to become the AI layer for every ERP system on the planet.

The CTO said the quiet part out loud: "The greatest untapped opportunity in enterprise AI wasn't large language models. It was AI built for the structured data that runs the world's businesses."

Read that again.

If SAP embeds TabPFN into its ERP ecosystem, every SAP customer gets predictive AI baked into their core systems. No data science team required. No custom model training. No integration project.

This collapses the competitive moat for every vendor selling "AI-powered analytics" on top of SAP data. It also means the 3 million organizations running SAP are about to get AI capabilities they didn't build and can't easily replicate elsewhere.

SAP also froze all hiring outside AI roles last week. The capital reallocation is happening now — not in a planning deck.
