Treasury just put every enterprise using Chinese AI models on sanctions watch

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dropped a bombshell on July 21.

The U.S. will examine every Chinese open-source AI model for intellectual property theft. If they find stolen American IP in the weights, sanctions follow.

"We've seen watermarks of US large language models on many of the Chinese models. That's unacceptable."

This isn't theoretical anymore. Bessent said the administration is looking at Chinese models "in the coming days." The enforcement lever is OFAC sanctions — the same ones that crippled Russian banks.
